Bethesda Students Take the Stage at the 2025 Ecobank Chess Championship

We are so proud to share that our incredible students from Bethesda School for the Blind recently took part in the 2025 Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship and what a powerful experience it was.

From June 26 to 28, over 2,500 students from 450 schools across Nigeria gathered in Lagos to compete in what has now become the country’s biggest and most inclusive chess tournament ever. Organized by the Nigeria Chess Federation in partnership with Ecobank Nigeria and supported by MTN Nigeria, this year’s championship was more than just a competition. It was a celebration of intellect, diversity, and possibility. And right in the middle of all the excitement were our students, proudly representing Bethesda.

For us, this was more than a chess event. It was a moment of visibility, of proving to ourselves and to the world that we belong on every platform where talent and determination are celebrated. With adaptive equipment provided by the organizers and plenty of support all around, our students joined other secondary school teams in six rounds of fast-paced, strategic gameplay. Our players used tactile chess sets specially designed for the visually impaired. Each board had subtle raised markings to help them feel the squares, and every piece had distinct textures so they could identify them by touch. Moves were announced verbally, helping us stay fully engaged throughout every match.

These small adjustments made a huge difference and allowed our students to compete with confidence and pride. While we did not walk away with the championship trophy, we walked away with something just as valuable: respect, applause, and an unforgettable sense of achievement. Everywhere we turned, people were inspired by our team’s focus, strategy, and spirit. Every participant at the tournament received a certificate, and our school was specially recognized for helping to expand the scope of the event’s inclusivity. Being part of this history-making moment means so much to us. It reminds us that inclusion is not a favour. It is a right.

The warmth and encouragement we felt from Ecobank, MTN, and the Nigeria Chess Federation were truly uplifting. This was not just about winning games. It was about showing up, showing strength, and showing the world what is possible when access meets opportunity. We are so grateful for everyone who made our participation possible, and we are already looking forward to what comes next. This is just the beginning for our students. And yes, we will be back on that board, stronger than ever.

Until then, we keep playing. We keep pushing. We keep proving that greatness knows no limits.
