Triumph Against the Odds: Onyishi Obinna Augustine Makes First Class at Nigerian Law School and is Called to the Bar

At Bethesda Home and School for the Blind, we have always believed that disability is not inability. Today, that belief has once again been affirmed in the most powerful way. We are filled with pride as we celebrate Onyishi Obinna Augustine, one of our outstanding alumni, who graduated with First Class Honours from the Nigerian Law School. He was officially called to the Nigerian Bar at the 2025 Call to Bar ceremony held in Abuja.

Obinna’s story is not just one of academic brilliance. It is a journey defined by resilience, purpose, and unshakable commitment. Despite being visually impaired, he consistently rose above limitations and expectations. His academic journey began at Bethesda Home and School for the Blind, where he stood out for his intelligence, curiosity, and dedication to learning.

From an early age, Obinna was passionate about justice and advocacy. That passion led him to study law, even though the path for blind students in Nigeria’s mainstream academic system is rarely smooth. He embraced the challenges, remained focused, and kept moving forward with quiet determination.

In November 2024, Obinna sat for the Bar Finals, one of the most rigorous examinations required to practice law in Nigeria. When the results were released, he was among the top-performing students nationwide, earning First Class Honours. This elite recognition is awarded to fewer than two percent of candidates each year. This achievement is remarkable for any student. For Obinna, who relied on braille materials, screen readers, long study nights, and unwavering perseverance, it represents something even greater. It is a powerful declaration of what is possible when determination meets opportunity.

On Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, Obinna stood tall in his black gown and white wig. Surrounded by family, mentors, and fellow aspirants to the Bar, he was formally called to the Nigerian Bar at the Body of Benchers Complex in Abuja. The applause that followed was not just for his academic success, but for the hope he represents to so many others. This moment marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another. It is a victory for inclusive education and a bright light for the visually impaired community in Nigeria and beyond.

At Bethesda, we are incredibly proud of Obinna. His success is a shining reminder that talent knows no physical limitation. It is also a call to action for society to create environments where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive. We celebrate not just an achievement, but a symbol of what is possible when we invest in potential and believe in every learner
